Project Description

Excavated in the early 20th century by Soprintendenza Vittorio Spinazzola, the Via dell’Abbondanza was Pompeii’s main thoroughfare for commerce and travel in the ancient city. Multiple workshops and houses are preserved along this route, with a plethora of visual evidence ranging from political graffiti to store front wall paintings. In our VR application, you can walk down the street and experience the sense of going down a street as a Pompeiian first-hand through photogrammetric models (derived from source photos taken by Arkansas undergraduates) and excavation plates from the original excavation. The current 2 block stretch is accurate in its placement and scale to the space itself, and certain graffiti is highlighted or translated for the player. You are also able to walk into an accurate recreation of a Pompeiian house, the house of Paquius Proculus, and see the placement of mosaics and wall paintings at the end of the block, creating a truly immersive experience.
